Seven Tips for A Successful Engagement Session | Virginia Wedding + Elopement Photographer

November 3, 2018

Why are engagement sessions important? Engagement sessions are the best way for you to get to know your photographer and for them to know you. They allow the photographer to see your natural chemistry so they can tell your story in the best way possible.

The entire experience from session planning, wardrobe styling, shooting the actual session, is exciting and fun. I want to ensure that the photos I create are real, adventurous, and show everyone that you two had no choice but to get married. So I’ve created this quick little guide to help you kill it at your engagement session.

Tip #1

We all know that wedding planning can be stressful and your engagement session could just feel like another thing you need to check off of a ‘to do’ list. BUT do the best you can to put all the craziness aside and get excited about your engagement session! It’s always normal to feel nervous and camera shy but I always say take those yoga type deep breaths and let it all go. Engagement sessions are supposed to be fun and adventurous and they will be so much better if you relax, have fun and trust that your photographer has the skills to make you look your very best!

Tip #2

I always recommend choosing a location that’s meaningful to you and your fiance, not just a pretty place. I’ve shot in alleyways, behind shopping centers, and even on some of the prettiest beaches. I promise an experienced photographer can make pretty much any location look amazing. I always say rather than focusing on having a gorgeous background, choose a location that tells your story. Years from now when you look back on this time, you’ll want it to be about more than just frolicking in the park.

Tip #3

Styling your wardrobe will allow you to get the best results for your outfit decisions during your engagement photos. If you normally wouldn’t wear florals, don’t wear that for your session. Embrace your everyday style! By forcing yourself into an outfit that is not you will only make you uncomfortable.

Tip #4

Do something fun!! Something that will allow you to actually hold each other close, smile, laugh, and playfully kiss. You can’t fake natural chemistry and there’s nothing quite like a genuine smile and capturing pure happiness. If you’re in an environment and doing something that you really enjoy, those emotions & chemistry will flow naturally and the photos will be more authentic.

Tip #5

You two are better than Pinterest!! While I love using Pinterest to help inspire clients to create a vision for their session. It can be used as a great tool to find outfit inspiration along with some ideas that fit your personalities. However, keep in mind that copying those quirky poses eventually will be out of style and date.

Tip #6

Most couples approach the engagement session with the mindset that they need “just a few good photos for the save the date” but the truth is, the engagement session is SO much more than that. Most couples think “oh I only need a few good ones for save the dates” but the engagement session is so much more than save the dates. It’s a moment in time before you embark on a crazy new adventure in life. There will be happiness, stress levels on high, and times when you just want to snuggle in and never let go. It’s these little moments (and how well you deal with them) that will define your marriage. One day you will look back on your engagement photos and you’ll remember all the excitement of prior to your wedding day. You need to think about how you really want to remember this time with your other half. I always say budget for things like engagement albums, prints, and framed art. I promise that if you’ve planned your session properly you will fall in love with way more than just a few images.

Tip #7

My most favorite thing about engagement sessions is getting the opportunity to know my couples as individuals and as a couple prior to their wedding day. It also gives them a chance to get to know me and build that one on one relationship. It allows you to see how I work. I have found that engagement sessions with your wedding photographer can help build trust, and trust is very important. When you trust your wedding photographer you will only be more relaxed on your wedding day because you know they will document your story in the best way.

I hope that these tips will help you plan your most perfect engagement session and that you may have gotten excited to schedule a session with me. As I have mentioned prior, an engagement session is the best way to get to know me and for me to get to know you. It will allow us to figure out how we can tell the best version of your story that will show off your legacy.
